1.North-eastern Himalaya

Widespread mass movements of soil in the form of slides, caused deaths and devastation due to cloud bursts, rainfall of the order of 160cm in destruction of large number of bridges including the famous Anderson bridge at Tista Bazar.

Heavy rains resulted in numerous slides and subsidence resulting in disruption of road and rail communication on Siliguri-Darjeeling Sector for considerable time.

North Bengal

1975

Tista,Jaldhaka and Diana rivers were flooded . Wide spread landslides and floods rendered 4500 people homeless.

Sikkim and Darjeeling

1976

Landslides in Sikkim and Darjeeling area due to heavy rainfall and consequent floods in Tista Valley due to which several people died.

North Sikkim

1983

Widespread incidences of landslides and damages occurred. A number of bridges were washed away and highways were blocked. Traffic could not move for two months on the affected streach. Extensive loss of property and life also occurred. An army camp belonging to Border Roads Organisation,was completely washed away.

Landslides incidences on NH-22 causing severe damage to roads and property. Landslides at Nathpa,Urni,Dhang ,Wangtu,Powari,Panginala and Malling are recurring every year in rainy and snow melting season ,subsequently.

1993

Jhakri landslide on NH-22 occurred on 25th feb 93,affected the highway(450m),blocking for two months

Uttar Pradesh

1970(July & Sept)

Alaknanda river caused considerable loss of life among pilgrim. Many bridge, houses and entire villages were washed away. More than 233 people were killed.

Heavy rainfall and erosion of hill slopes causing damming of river and burst involving loss of life, property and disruption of communications. One village Belakuchi was completely washed away. This is tearmed as Alaknanda Tragedy.

Slide on Mussoorie bye pass(Mussoorie-Chamba Road) creating disruption of communications and many houses suffered extensive damages.

Kathgodam-Nainital state highway and Kathgodam-Almora state highway are both affected by landslides during the monsoons.

1990

Loss of 36 lives and 19 injured. 49 building school and hospital damaged. Road network and other communications were disrupted. Property worth millions of rupee damaged.

Gauhati,Assam

1991

Over 300 lives lost, roads and buildings damaged. Property worth millions of rupees destroyed.

1991

More than 2000 lives lost, road and other communications completely disrupted in the area, houses and bridges damaged.

200 houses destroyed and many people injured in landslides on NH-39.Kohima remained cutoff from rest of the country for several days.

A jeep with its occupants was buried on H.T.road,40 km from Shimla.

Ratighat,U.P.

Sept 12,1993

Nainital Hill area remained cutoff for about a week. Five dozers worked day and night to clear the debris. Landslide followed heavy rains.

Nilgiri Hills,T.N.

Nov 11,1993

40 people died in landslides, over 600 families shifted to safer places. Road and houses destroyed. Landslide followed heavy rains.
